Indian Sweet Crispy Chilli Chicken Recipe

Date

Indo Chinese food is my absolute favourite types of food! The perfect balance of sweet and chilli. This dish is defiantly worth trying out at home specially if you have never tried it at restaurants.

So what is chilli chicken?

Crispy deep fried chicken coated in a sweet and spicy sauce. A perfectly comforting and warm dish I serve mine with either chips or noodles but you can serve this chicken with absolutely anything.

Indian crispy sweet chilli chicken

Things you will need:

  • 300g boneless chicken (can be cut into strips or cubes)

For the batter:

  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp corn flour
  • ¼ tsp red chilli powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper ground
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 egg
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 3-4 tbsp sparkling water
  • Pinch crushed chilli flakes

For the sauce:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 green chilli chopped
  • ½ tbs Garlic crushed
  • ½ tbs Ginger crushed
  • 1 whole green pepper chopped into chunks
  • Salt to taste
  • Dark soy sauce
  • Chilli garlic sauce (not too spicy one)
  • Sweet chilli sauce
  • Spring onions
  • Sesame seeds to garnish
  • ½ tsp Black onion seeds

Method:

  1. In a bowl mix all the dry ingredients for the batter and slowly add the sparking water (try no to over mix) set aside for 10 mins. You can adjust the egg and water quantity depending on how thick you would like batter coating.
  2. Dip the chicken pieces into the batter and deep fry on 180 degrees for 5 mins or until cooked. (I cut my chicken into thin strips but you can cut the chicken to your preferred way)
  3. Drain the chicken on kitchen towel and set aside.

For the sauce:

  1. Heat oil in a wok or non-stick pan.
  2. Add the white part of the spring onions to the oil and add the garlic, ginger, black onion seeds and chilli. Fry for a few seconds.
  3. Add the green pepper and the chilli garlic sauce.
  4. Add the sweet chilli sauce and dark soy sauce and stir well.
  5. Leave to simmer for 1 minute on medium heat add a little water to avoid sticking
  6. Add salt and let the sauce thicken.
  7. When you are ready to serve add the fried chicken to the sauce and cook on medium heat until all the sauce is cooked through to the chicken.
  8. Sprinkle the green part of the spring onions and sesame seeds and serve.

You may like to add MSG to the chilli chicken but I tend to avoid it.

For a healthier option you can shallow fry the chicken or grill for 25 mins.

You can serve this with chips, salad, naan bread, fried rice and noodles. This is such a versatile recipe you can use this as starters, canapés or a main.

For all you veggies you can replace the chicken with cauliflower, broccoli or tofu.  Seafood lovers try this with recipe with prawns!!
