Buttercream is a frosting typically used to decorate cakes, cupcakes and other desserts. In simple terms it is made by creaming butter with sugar and a touch of vanilla extract for flavour. A easy to make frosting, multipurpose and can be flavoured and coloured to suit any occations. Hence why it is so popular.
A basic recipe for making buttercream frosting:
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 4 cups of powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons of Vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons of milk or cream (optional)
To make the buttercream, begin by creaming the butter in a large bowl. Wait until it becomes light and fluffy. Slowly add the powdered sugar whilst continuing to beat the mixture. This is important. Do not add all the sugar at once. Once all the powdered sugar has been added the mixture will now be thick and creamy. Now add in the vanilla extract or other flavourings. If the buttercream is too thick, you can thin it out by adding a little milk or cream.
Now that your buttercream is ready you can spread place this in a piping bag and begin your artwork. Make fun designs and shapes. Be wary when making buttercream the texture and consistency will change depending on temperature and humidity. Too hot and it will be too soft and runny and took cold will mean it is too hard to mould. To avoid this keep your ingredients at room temperature before starting the recipe.
